Running on a daily basis is definitely a commendable habit. Keeping your body fit throughout the year will ensure proper overall health and blood circulation. Still, during colder months, exposed skin can suffer a lot due to the cold, frost and wind. In that respect, adequate skincare is in order. Together with suitable clothing garments, skincare for such conditions will make sure that the skin is protected and elastic.
Ditch the soaps
Regardless of the season and your running routine, you should wash your face with cleansers twice a day – in the morning and evening. But, during the months when cold can do a lot of damage and dry out your skin, not to mention having the wind in your face as you run, you should forget about using facial cleansers that contain soap or sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Use cream cleansers that are mild enough for the skin but still effectively remove the accumulated dirt. Organic facial cleansers or baby products in this case work the best. Also, make sure to use warm water, and stay away from hot or cold water.
Moisturize twice as much
Your skin needs moisture all year round, but it’s especially necessary to moisturize it with quality hydrating products in winter and before your running routine. Therefore, don’t forget to look into the possible options when it comes to creams. Also, even if you have oily skin, stay away from gels because they can actually contribute to your face freezing as you run. Creams and oils are the way to go. Moisturize in the morning and evening, but also apply a generous amount of product before you head out to your daily run session.
Make a barrier
If your skin is already dry or you have some dry patches on your face, make sure to create a barrier between the cold and the surface of your skin. There are some skincare products specially marketed to athletes, but regular Vaseline can do the trick, too. You don’t have to apply a thick and heavy layer all over your face because it can get bothersome as you run and sweat. Instead, apply it on the most prominent areas that get dry.
Not many people think that sun is of any danger during the winter, but this is far from truth. If you run during the day, you still need to use an SPF in your products. No one said that running during winter would be easy skin-wise. You basically have to worry both about the cold and sun. Of course, don’t forget about rich and moisturizing lip balm with an SPF. Wind and cold can especially dry out your lips so keep a balm in your pocket.
Proper skincare for winter runners doesn’t only include applying products before you go out, but taking care of your skin when you get home as well. Applying your facial cream before the bed was already mentioned, but the skin can always benefit from some additional care. In that respect, make sure to exfoliate your face at least twice a week and use regenerating products such as Dermalogica Skin Renewal Booster or face masks that deeply restore skin cells.
Skincare during winter is essential to keep your skin healthy and radiant, but it’s especially important for runners. Of course, don’t forget to dress appropriately. While most runners already have adequate clothes and footwear, don’t neglect your hands and head. Therefore, always wear gloves and a hat when you jog. That way you’ll prevent your ears and fingers from freezing as well.
